Music History I

In this course, you will learn about the political, social, and religious trends that influence and shape music from one era to the next. You will study the development of musical styles, genres, compositional procedures, historical performance issues and practices, and their relevance to other eras. In the process, we will take a closer look at the lives of important historical figures and become familiar with some of the great works in Western music history.

In the first semester, Music History I surveys the history of Western music from Antiquity through the Renaissance and the Baroque. The second semester continues with the Late Baroque and Classical Periods in the mid-18th century through the early Romatic period.
