Japanese Cinema and the Arts - Dr. James Moyer

Spring 2018 M 1-3:50 pm

We will view at least ten important films made in Japan or by Japanese artists, doing so with close attention to film technique (e.g., mise en scene, cinematography), Japanese aesthetics (mono no aware, Noh theater), and modern Japanese history. We will consider especially some deeply felt films of the postwar period, which reveal a society grappling with war’s cost, generational change, rapid economic growth, and anxiety about traditional values giving way to Western influence. The way these films express and examine changing gender roles will be of particular interest to our study. We will tour Shofuso House and Garden and participate in a traditional tea ceremony (chanoyo), as part of our inquiry of Japanese aesthetics and their inflections in film.
