Shakespeare and Others - Dr. Thomas Apple

Fall 2017 M/Th 9-10:20 am

In this course we will read a group of plays and study the tumultuous world of the theatre during the Renaissance. In addition to the work of William Shakespeare, we will consider his contemporaries such as Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe, Thomas Kyd, and others. We will read the plays with keen attention to the social and political pressures of the late Elizabethan, early Jacobean age. We will also analyze them in terms more artistic and philosophic: How do we figure emotions and thoughts, indeed, all ethereal things, in the body and through the body? How do we re/present desire? How do these authors stage the anxieties of an age and of humanity? Possible plays include: Jonson’s The Alchemist; Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus; Kyd’s The Spanish Tragedy, Chapman’s Bussy D’Amois; and Tourneur’s The Revenger’s Tragedy.
