Subjectivity in Modern Philosophy and Psychoanalysis - Dr. Caroline Meline

Spring 2018 M/W 1-2:20 pm

What do we discover when we introspect our conscious minds? How complete and reliable is that information? That is, do we, and can we, know ourselves, or do we walk around basically self-deceived? Philosophers and psychologists have provided a variety of answers to these questions. Rene Descartes, John Locke, David Hume, Sigmund Freud, and Jacques Lacan presented influential, and in some cases shocking, theories about the nature of the subject, or conscious self. The first three are modern philosophers, and the second two are psychoanalysts. We will study the views of these five figures and then look at some findings from neuroscience that consider the subject by studying the brain.
