Introduction to Literature - Fall 2018/Spring 2019
(LIT011-1 2018/2019)

This year-long course is the final class in the ESL sequence at Curtis. It is also designed as a transitional class to college-level literature and other liberal arts classes. We will explore fiction (short stories, novels, poems) as well as non-fiction literature (essays and articles). We will finetune language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing while developing the ability to interact critically and personally with the text. This course also departs from standard ESL courses where the focus is on the literal interpretation of images and narratives, and we begin exploring the figurative interpretations and context. Introduction to Literature functions to prepare students to fully engage in the experience of reading literature, allowing students to see the connective tissue between text and their daily lives.
