Modern American Drama - Spring 2020 - Dr. Thomas Apple
(Modern American Drama SP20)

Our focus in this seminar will be to trace the trajectory from Long Day’s Journey into Night to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and to study the development of Modern American dramatic literature. We’ll read 4-5 plays by such writers as O’Neill, Hellman, Miller, Thornton Wilder, Inge, and Albee, and we’ll watch films made of the scripts, and dip into a smattering of serious reviews and long criticism of particular productions, trying to get at both literal/dramatic and theatrical/performative interpretations of the texts.  Reading assignments of a reasonable length per week and per term.  Quizzes (pop when needful), exams, a few two-three page essays.
